Welcome to Selma Street Elementary's Media Center

Mission Statement

The mission statement of Selma Street's Media Center is to encourage our students to become life long readers by using age appropriate technology and a variety of genres for them to use in and outside of the library.

The Media Center

The Media Center is open Monday - Friday. Our students are trained by the Media Specialist to check out their own books during class time as well as during open book checkout. K-5th has a set schedule of 30 minute class times. They are allowed to come in throughout the day for Open Book Checkout. There are many skills taught throughout the school year. For example, Internet Safety, Dictionary and research skills, genres, Dewey Decimal System, or anything else that the classroom teacher may need for me to work on or emphasize the importance of with our students.

Accelerated Reader

Accelerated Reader is a program designed to test children on their reading level. First –fifth grade is given the STAR test each nine weeks, to determine their ZPD (Zone of Proximal Development). The ZPD gives each student their reading range. This, along with their GE (Grade Equivalent), usually determines their AR book level. Once we see that the students are making an 85% or higher on a consistent basis, they are usually moved up to the next AR level. AR points are based upon their ZPD range given from the STAR test. Their ZPD range, determines how many points each student will need to reach their goal for each nine weeks. Teachers will send home those goals in their AR folders. In order to participate in our AR parties, your child must have reached their nine weeks AR goal AND have an 85% average or higher. At the end of the year, each grade level has a challenge goal in addition to their nine weeks goal. These points are accumulated throughout the school year. If the challenge goal is met AND they have an 85% average or higher at the end of the year, they will be rewarded with participation in a Waterslide for the day. For the top reader in each grade level, they will be awarded with a limo ride, special surprise, and lunch at a local restaurant. Kindergarten will begin taking AR tests and checking out books in January. It is very important that you read at least 20 minutes each night with your child. I am looking forward to all the students being involved a 100% in AR. I have listed the challenge goals below for each grade level. If you have any questions please feel free to contact me at 794-1463.

Thank you,

Mrs. Loftin, Media Specialist
